We are excited to announce our upcoming celebrations for World Book Day at Rowans Nursery on Thursday, March 5th, 2026. This annual event is a highlight in our nursery calendar, giving us the perfect opportunity to celebrate the joy of stories, authors, and illustrators while supporting the early literacy skills that are so vital in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
The 2026 Theme: Read Your Way
This year’s official theme is Read Your Way, which encourages children to explore books in whatever way feels most natural and fun to them. We know that every child interacts with literature differently depending on their age and stage of development:
- Babies and Toddlers: Exploring chunky board books, feeling textured sensory pages, and enjoying the rhythm of nursery rhymes.
- Pre-Schoolers: Following storylines, joining in with repeated phrases, and beginning to understand that print carries meaning.
Whether it is listening to a favourite story in our cosy reading corners or “reading” to their friends, we want every child to feel the magic of a good book.
Dress Up as Your Favourite Character
To make the day extra special, we invite all the children across our rooms to come to nursery dressed as their favourite book character! Whether they want to be a classic character like Peter Rabbit, a brave knight, or a modern favourite like The Gruffalo, we cannot wait to see the creative costumes arriving at our Kings Road setting.
Why Reading Matters in the Early Years
Fostering a love of reading from a young age does wonders for a child’s development. It introduces them to new vocabulary, sparks their imagination, and helps them understand the world around them. Sharing a story also provides wonderful moments of bonding and supports listening and attention skills – all crucial stepping stones for when they eventually transition to primary school.
Our Commitment to Literacy
At Rowans Nursery, we believe that a love for reading starts from day one. That is why we run our successful Sharing Book Scheme for children in our older two-year-old rooms and above. This scheme allows parents to swap books at our main entrance, ensuring that the magic of storytelling continues long after the nursery day has ended.
Our Toy Library also features activity bags that complement our focus on language development, making learning a fun, shared experience for the whole family.
Tips for Reading at Home
To keep the World Book Day momentum going, here are a few simple ways to encourage reading at home:
- Let them choose: Allow your child to pick the book, even if it is the exact same one you read yesterday!
- Bring the story to life: Use funny voices, exaggerated facial expressions, and actions to keep them engaged.
- Make it a routine: A quick bedtime story is a lovely way to wind down and ensures they get daily exposure to books.
Join the Fun
If your child doesn’t usually attend on a Thursday, please get in touch with our team to see if we can accommodate a swap or an extra session so they don’t miss out on the festivities.
For families looking to join the Rowans family, World Book Day is a wonderful time to see our “learning through play” philosophy in action. Book a personal tour to visit our Sutton Coldfield nursery and see how we support every child’s unique journey.
